It all started with the idea of a simple solid and sustainable hand cream that is not only good for the skin but also good for the environment. For this reason we asked ourselves: What is currently one of the biggest problems? And the answer was clear: The decline in biodiversity.
For this reason, we have decided to create flowering meadows with every cream sold. The reason? Too few companies are committed to biodiversity. And flowering meadow is as retreat and shelter for birds, insects and many other animals fast growing and efficient CO2 storage, which is good for the topsoil. So we have created 3m² per product since the start at the end of 2020 and this is how it is in total more than 230,000 m² got together and a Contribution of over €50,000. That is 30 times the area of the entire slab surface of Cologne Cathedral. And it's not only high - it's also wide.
Now we have to face reality and accept that our approach was a bit too idealistic. We have to adjust the impact contribution and will plant 1m² per product instead of 3 in the future. There are several reasons for this, which we would like to list here:
  1. For the pre-financing of goods and our continued existence, we also have to turn to banks and with a 15% tax on sales for Blühwiese, lending is unfortunately difficult.
  2. There is still no legal form that favors an impact-based startup like ours. That's why we "buy" the flowering meadow and instead of the tax advantage, we even have to pay taxes on our flowering meadow.
  3. We have invested almost 15% of our turnover in flowering meadows - even though we are not yet profitable.
  4. The Corona Pandemic and the closure of the retail trade did not leave us untouched either, and raw material prices (paper, metal and oils) have risen by 100% in some cases.

Does that mean we plant less flowering meadows?

We hope not, because through our desired growth and our desired goals, we expect to reach even more people and, bottom line, to plant more flowering meadows with plastic-free natural cosmetics than last year.
