Children's pictures on the Internet

Kinderbilder im Internet

This is not a normal blog post. Our primary goal is not to share knowledge with you, but to stimulate a discussion about children's images on the Internet and share our opinion on the subject with you.

The background to this blog post is that a few weeks ago we posted a picture of a child wearing sunscreen on ourInstagram profile and on this occasion we (internally) dealt intensively with this topic.

Since not everyone in our team has the same opinion on this topic, it is not easy for us to take a clear position. That is why we have weighed up some arguments below.

Maybe they will help you to form your own opinion on this topic. (By the way, you can now find some very good videos on YouTube about children's pictures on the Internet .)

ON THE ONE HAND:

  • We have launched aproduct especially for children (Maya the Bee sunscreen) and would like to advertise it with pictures of children so that it is clear who the product is intended for and approved for.
  • There are many other companies and influencers who use a lot of children's pictures and do not limit their marketing in this way. This content is very well received because children are very cute.

ON THE OTHER HAND:

  • According to the Data Protection Act, parents or guardians decide on the processing of their children’s personal data.
  • Children have a right to privacy and their right to personality must be protected. This means that publishing images of children, especially if they are intimate or inappropriate, may violate their rights.
  • There are some people on our team who don't like photos of children in particular, where you can see a lot of skin or the face.
  • Images that end up on the Internet are freely available to everyone who sees them, and you can never be sure what they will be used for.
  • Parents also make wrong decisions because people are fallible and may not yet be able to judge whether their own child really wants that.

CONCLUSION:

The topic of children's images is not black and white, but controversial and has many different sides, which makes it difficult for us as a start-up. There are images that clearly do not correspond to our moral values and violate children's personal rights. For example, we consider an image of a child's arm being rubbed with our Maya the Bee sunscreen to be acceptable and a good compromise.

What is your opinion on this topic?
