Why are bees so threatened?

Warum sind die Bienen so bedroht?

Can you imagine what would happen if bees died out? These little creatures not only have a huge impact on other species, but also on us and our lives. From the bees depends about a third of our food and commercial agriculture. With the help of their flower pollination, fruit, vegetables, nuts and many more are natural foods for us. Bees pollinate around 80% of all native wild and crop plants and thus ensure the continued existence of biodiversity.

In the mid-2000s, however, the great bee mortality began. Now is one of the more than 500 wild bee species in Germany half are threatened with extinction. There are several reasons for this.

For example, one of them is malnutrition of the beesreinforced by monocultures and widespread arable farming. In the fields, the bees find either only very one-sided food or too little food. There are no longer enough wildflower meadows for bees to find a variety of foods.

Another reason is the insecticides and pesticides, which are spread on the plants to protect against pests. These can be deadly for the bees. They disturb their orientation and weaken their immune system.

Bees are dying more and more frequently these days because they no nesting sites in nature find more and also more of parasites and pathogens to be attacked.

To the climate change many bees also fall victim. With milder winters, they fly longer and use more energy, so they can't live as long and produce fewer offspring. Climate change also increases periods of drought, when fewer plants bloom and bees have less food.

What is particularly alarming for us, however, is that the absence of bees reduces the harvest more than a lack of fertilizer or too little water.

So if bee deaths continue or even worsen, many of our favorite foods could soon be gone. The lack of pollination will also result in reduced biodiversity. Fewer bees mean fewer plants can be pollinated and therefore die out. Animals that depend on these plants as a source of food feel this hard. So this little pollinator occupies a fundamental role in our ecosystem, and without it our world will look very different and emptier.

If you want to do something about the bees dying yourself, then come here a few Tipps. For example, you can support flower diversityby planting a wildflower meadow in the garden or herbs on the balcony. You can also wild bee nest sites through deadwood piles, open ground areas and dry stone walls. It is also important where to go avoid using pesticides. That means choosing organic products when shopping and avoiding heavily contaminated products.

With our products from 4peoplewhocare you can also support the bees. Several square meters of flowering meadows are planted for each product. We use the beeswax from the bees in many of our products. In this way we create a natural cycle.
