Vegan in the label jungle

Vegan im Label-Dschungel

Sometimes it can also be a bit difficult to tell if a product is vegan or not. Here are a few tips on how you can feel more secure with the label check:

First of all a big help: Allergens are in bold. This includes animal ingredients such as milk and eggs.

Is "May contain traces of..." still vegan? If animal content is only listed in the traces, the product is still vegan. This simply means that the product comes from a factory that also works with the listed trace substances.

Typical animal ingredients you should have on the plan:

  • Butter(rein)fett
  • Gelatine
  • Ghee
  • Casein
  • Karmin
  • Lanolin
  • L-Cystein
  • Lecithin
  • milk powder
  • Milk
  • Rennet/Lab
  • Tallow

Now it's getting cryptic: Some ingredients are also behind mysterious ones E numbers hidden. It's really tricky here sometimes. These substances are not necessarily from animal sources, but they can be. If in doubt, leave it in the store.

  • E 101 - Riboflavin
  • E 120 – Carmine
  • E132 – Indigotin1, Indigokarmin
  • E163 – Anthocyane
  • E 322 – Lecithin
  • E631 – Dinatriumosinat
  • E 901 - Beeswax
  • E 904 – Shellac
  • E 1105 – Lysozym

If in doubt, simple label scanner apps like: CodeCheck or the MAP App also maximally helpful, especially when faced with chemistry equations like some cosmetics.
